What a hook and demo video is

Two clips stitched together. The hook is a reaction clip with a line of text over it, and it has one job: stop the scroll. The demo is a screen recording of your product, and it does the selling. The format suits apps and websites well because the demo is the product itself.

The point of building it as an automation rather than a video is that every part can change from one post to the next:

  • The hook clip, drawn from a folder of reactions.
  • The text, drawn from your list of hooks.
  • The demo clip, drawn from a folder of recordings.
  • The song, drawn from a folder of tracks.

Five hooks, five reactions, five demos and five songs is 625 different videos. That is what you want when you post every day, since a daily post that repeats itself stops working within a week.

Create a vertical video automation

Log in, click Create and choose Vertical video. The other option, Slideshow, has its own tutorial.

The dialog then asks where the hook comes from: a clip or folder in your gallery, or a link. Paste a link when you have found a hook on TikTok or YouTube that already performs, and Postjam downloads the video into a Hooks folder and uses it as the first clip. Then it asks for the demo, which comes from your gallery. Every step has an "I'll do it later" button, and the video in this article takes it, so both clips are chosen afterwards in the Studio.

Before this step, have two folders ready in your gallery: one of hook reaction clips and one of demo recordings. In the video they are named by date, "Hooks September 23" and "Demo September 22", which is a habit worth copying. A folder named by the day you recorded it tells you later which batch a winning post came from.

Give each clip a folder

A new vertical video automation opens with two clips on the timeline. Select the first one and open its Source tab, then pick the hooks folder. Do the same for the second clip with the demo folder.

Each post takes one file from each folder, so the folder is the pool and the clip is the slot it fills. Add more recordings to a folder later and the automation picks them up on its next post without any change to the automation itself.

Add a text overlay with rotating hooks

Two clips with no text is a dull video. Click Add and choose Text overlay, then write a hook that works in your niche. The one in the video is for a screen time app: "What do you mean I have to earn coins to scroll?"

Hooks come from TikTok, not from a blank page. Scroll your niche for a few minutes a day and write down the lines that keep appearing. Niche Marketing on TikTok: How to Grow an App Organically covers how to collect them.

Add as many hooks as you like; the video has five, and there is no limit. Then choose the overlay's mode:

  • Fixed ships the line exactly as written, on every post.
  • Cycle takes the line that has shipped the fewest times, so your hooks come round evenly rather than at random.
  • AI Rewrite rewords the line at export. Low touches only the connectives, Medium rephrases the same content, and High finds a new angle inside the same story. No level invents a claim, a price, a feature or an offer.

The video keeps the overlay on Cycle. That is the right default while you are still learning which hooks land, since a rewrite muddies the test.

Last, drag the overlay's end across the whole timeline so the text stays up through the demo as well as the hook. Press play and the line should still be there when the recording starts.

Re-roll before you trust it

Press Re-roll beside the play button. Each press shows another combination: a different reaction, a different hook, a different demo, and once music is on, a different song. This is the same roll a scheduled post makes, so what you see is what will go out.

Press it ten times. If one combination looks wrong, the fix is in the pool, not the automation: a recording that is too long, a hook that reads badly over one of the reactions. Fix the pool and roll again. Skipping this step is how an automation posts something odd on day three.

Add music

Select the Music track and open its Source tab. There are three ways to fill it:

  • Viral song rolls one of Postjam's curated tracks for every video.
  • Custom selection rolls only the library tracks you tick.
  • Gallery rolls one of the audio files in a folder of your own.

The video uses Gallery with a folder of songs picked for the automation. If you have not collected any yet, Viral song is the quickest way to get a track that suits short video.

Schedule it

You can export a video, AirDrop it to your phone and post it by hand. That is fine for a first test. Scheduling is what saves the time: about 15 minutes a day for one automation, which is hours every week.

Click Schedule and turn the schedule on. Switching it on with no day picked picks every day. Set the time; the video posts every morning, so the day's video is live by the end of the first coffee.

Then pick an account per platform:

  • Instagram offers Trial reel once an account is chosen. A trial reel goes to people who do not follow you first, so a hook that flops never reaches your main audience. A trial reel never lands on your grid, which is the trade.
  • YouTube, Threads and Facebook post on their own.
  • TikTok arrives as a finished draft in your TikTok inbox and you tap post, because TikTok's API allows nothing else. Here is why.

Save, and the automation posts every day without you.

FAQ

Do I need to record new clips for every post? No. Each post draws from the folders you set once. Record a new batch when the old one stops performing, and drop it into the same folder.

How many hooks should I start with? Five is enough to see a spread. Fewer than three and every post looks the same; more than twenty and it takes a month to learn which ones work.

Can the text overlay be different lengths on different posts? Yes. Each hook in a Cycle list is its own line. Keep hooks under about a dozen words so they read in the first second.

Why does my TikTok post need a tap? TikTok's API only accepts drafts. Postjam sends the finished video to your TikTok inbox, and posting it is a tap on the phone. Every other platform posts on its own.

What if I want the same video on Instagram's grid too? Turn Trial reel off for that account. A trial reel and a grid post are exclusive, so an automation posts one or the other.

Recap

A hook and demo automation is two clips, a text overlay and a song, each drawn from a pool you fill once. Cycle rotates the hooks, Re-roll shows you what will ship, and a schedule sends a fresh combination out every morning.
